Château Cantenac 2002

Simply delicious.

Niki recently picked up some new wines. As a matter of practice, we often try to find wines that we haven't tried before. This is a good habit to get into as a general rule. Getting the same wine every time might well help to reduce the odds of an unpleasant surprise, but the risk of that seems hardly worth the risk of missing a wine like this.

Chateau Cantenac, A.O.C. Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2002 is a red Bordeaux blend, seventy-five percent Merlot and twenty-five percent Cabernet Franc.

One of the first things that I noticed was the wonderful deep ruby color of this wine as it's poured into the glass. The nose was fruity, obviously with berries. The aging of the wine before bottling does it good here—adding complexity that might otherwise be lacking. I was pleasantly surprised by the spice that showed itself as the wine lingered on the palate.

I highly recommend it, whether to celebrate a special occasion or just another day.
